Ashery Mbilinyi

Profile

I'm Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of Victoria currently working on medical image analysis and deep learning. I previously did research at the University of Basel working with Prof. Heiko Schuldt where I developed novel deep learning approaches for medical image retrieval and similarity search, particularly focused on chest X-rays for radiological diagnosis. My work focuses on developing AI systems to assist medical professionals in their clinical workflow. I'm particularly interested in building intelligent systems that can retrieve clinically relevant medical images to aid in differential diagnosis. I've developed methods like CheReS, a multi-faceted deep learning system that considers both visual content and clinical context when searching for similar chest X-ray cases.
Before joining UVic, I also worked on adaptive learning systems and user interfaces at the University of Electro-Communications in Japan, collaborating with Prof. Hasegawa on modeling students' learning styles. My research interests span computer vision, medical image analysis, deep learning, and human-computer interaction with a focus on developing practical AI solutions that can enhance healthcare delivery and education.
